Bringing Local Theatre to Life Since 1932

Bunbury Theater Club

The Bunbury Repertory Club has been at the heart of community theatre in the South West for over 90 years. Based at the iconic Little Theatre on Molloy Street, we are proud to be one of Western Australia’s longest-running amateur theatre companies.

Founded in 1932, our mission has always been simple: to entertain, to inspire, and to provide a creative platform for local talent. From classic dramas and family favourites to bold new works and laugh-out-loud comedies, our productions reflect the energy and diversity of the community we serve.

New members are always welcome. The club is committed to showcasing local talents through the magic of community theatre.

Our History

The Bunbury Repertory Club (BRC) was established in 1932 and incorporated in June 1946, though there had been various theatre and music groups in the area prior to that date.

BRC operated out of the Little Theatre in Molloy Street, Bunbury, from 1946 to 2009. In 2005, the building was
damaged by a tornado that also impacted the New Lyric Theatre, the ABC studio, the Catholic Cathedral and many other buildings in Bunbury. The Little Theatre was out of action for almost a year while part of an exterior wall and the roof were replaced and the interior was repaired.

Unfortunately, in 2008, it was discovered that a very destructive family of termites had also been “bitten” by the theatre bug as they steadily feasted on our timbers. They refused to leave the stage and sought endless encores from their unseen audiences as they ate away at supporting beams over and under the stage and to the rear of the auditorium.

From 2008 to 2009, BRC spent valuable funds trying to remove the termites at the Little Theatre. During this time, BRC was only able to perform a few shows at the New Lyric Theatre.

It soon became apparent that the age of the building and the type of construction meant that the cost of repairing the damage was beyond the club’s capacity; so after much agonising, the site was sold in 2010. For a few years the club floated around hiring venues when needed and leasing a premises in the city centre to rehearse and create sets.

In January 2014, BRC took on the Eaton Hall on Pratt Road in Eaton. Renaming it ‘Little Theatre’, the club began transforming the former town hall into a fantastic intimate theatre, adding a stage and auditorium seating. The club has grand plans that are going to take time but for now we have a new home in Eaton, with the neighborhood welcoming us with open arms.

What exactly is amateur theatre?

Think of it as all the passion of Broadway… minus the budget, the fame, and the ability to quit our day jobs. We do it for love, not limos.

A fearless team of volunteers powered by caffeine, chaos, and questionable costume choices. Democracy reigns, but the stage manager always wins.

Everything from Shakespeare to modern comedies, musicals to mysteries. If it has drama, laughter, or the potential for someone to fall off a chair in a comedic way—we’re interested.

Just show up! We accept actors, directors, costume sewers, set painters, lighting techs, prop wranglers, and enthusiastic tea-makers. Bonus points if you can do all of those at once while tap dancing.

Not at all. If you’ve ever lied about finishing a book for book club, you’re halfway to method acting. We welcome all levels of experience—and promise only a little ribbing.

At The Little Theatre, which is small in size but mighty in spirit. It’s at 33 Pratt Road, Eaton—follow the sound of laughter, dramatic sighs, and someone asking “where’s the gaffer tape?!”

Let’s just say it involved a collapsing set wall, a live possum, and an actor who improvised like their life depended on it. The possum gave a stunning performance, by the way.

Most of the time, yes! We label our shows clearly. If it’s not suitable for little ones, we’ll let you know—usually with a big red sticker and a knowing wink.

Yes! They’re usually open to the public and involve a lot of nervous laughter, dramatic monologues, and someone accidentally singing the wrong verse. Just bring your best self—and maybe snacks.

Because drama never dies. Also, because the community keeps showing up, laughing, crying, and applauding—sometimes in the right order. And because, frankly, we love a good excuse to wear a cape.
